Mikel Arteta outlines aims after signing new Arsenal contract

Sunday has the potential to be a huge day for Arsenal.

After defeat for Manchester United on Saturday, as well as draws for Tottenham and Chelsea, the Gunners have the chance to make a huge stride forward in the fight for a top-four finish.

Mikel Arteta’s team will take on relegation-threatened Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium and will be confident of securing the victory that would put them to within a point of the Blues and three points clear of their north London rivals.

Mirror Sport has your latest Arsenal news ahead of arguably the team’s biggest game of the season.

Saka admits Spurs motivation

Arsenal tyro Bukayo Saka has said that fighting with Tottenham for fourth place has given the team even more motivation.

After Saturday’s fixtures, the Gunners have an excellent chance to put daylight between the nearest rivals, which may prove decisive as we head towards the crucial stage of the Premier League.

The two sides will meet on Thursday too in what promises to be a super-charged encounter at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“No, I don’t think there can be anything better,” said Saka when asked about the scrap with Spurs.

“That’s a great question, actually. I don’t think there can be anything that motivates us more. We’re already motivated enough, but we obviously don’t want to lose it to them. So it gives us that extra boost, but we know that we have to win all the games.”

The Gunners’ young squad was revitalised with the acquisitions of Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Martin Odegaard and others, with an outlay totalling around £150 million.

Di Canio recreates controversial Arsenal moment

One of the most remarkable moments in Premier League history came in a clash between Sheffield Wednesday and Arsenal, when Owls forward Paolo Di Canio pushed over referee Paul Alcock after being sent off.

Di Canio was slapped with a massive 11-game ban for his conduct and said in the aftermath that he “lost everything” after being given his marching orders.

Nevertheless, the Italian recreated the moment recently in a tounge-in-cheek fashion, as as an Owls legends’ side including the likes of Chris Waddle and Des Walker took on a Doncaster legends’ team at at Rovers’ Eco Power Stadium.
